KC Jockey & Santalina's - SHAKE picks up two movie sound tracks

People.. I just recieved this email from WHOMAG.net regarding reggae artiste/actor KC Jockey & Santalina single SHAKE just got picked up for two movie soundtracks...

The hit single “SHAKE” by Santalina and KC Jockey has recently been picked up by two independent films. “After Autumn” directed by Jamal Hill, features platinum recording artistLil’ Zane (Finding Forrester, Dr. Dolittle 2) and the beautiful SundayCarter (State Property 1&2, Soul Plane). It’s a story based off of a love triangle set in Philadelphia. The song “SHAKE” is played in a critical club scene as Sunday Carter is introduced to Lil’ Zane’s character. This movie is slated for a spring 2008 release.

The song was also picked up by a non-profit film entitled “Mind, Body, Mask” following the life of six different specially challenged hockey goalie and their struggles to follow their passions. This film is slated for a summer 2008 release.

The video for “SHAKE” recently broke a Billboard.com record for “Most Video Plays by an Unsigned Artist”. It received 59,615 spins in 3 days according to http://www.singingfool.com/. Way to go Santalina and KC!

Ban on Elephant & Sizzla

There are heightened calls to ban Elephant Man and Sizzla from performing at multiple concerts in Canada from gay rights groups. This opposition is becoming quite frequent for reggae dancehall artists when on tour. The groups claim that the Sizzla and Elephant Man "perform music it says incites violence against gays and lesbians." Toronto based group, Canadian Caribbean Human Rights Group, are calling Sizzla and Elephant Man by name stating they are both known for their antigay lyrics. "Compared to these two, (rapper) Eminem is much less expressive in inciting violence and murder," said Akim Larcher, a spokesperson for the Stop Murder Music campaign."Artists have the right to free speech, but their presence in Canada can be perceived as a licence to incite violence.

Canada has banned anti-Jew, anti-black people from entering the country. This should be no different.""Concert promoters have a responsibility not to provide a platform for artists that openly promote violence against any group in society," said Helen Kennedy, executive director of Egale Canada, a campaign supporter. It looks like all the constant brushes with the law have finally ended up working against rapper Foxy Brown, which should come as no surprise. On Friday, looking tired and worn out, she was sentenced to one year in jail for violating probation stemming from a fight with two manicurists in a New York City salon. "I'm not going to give you any more chances," Criminal Court Judge Melissa Jackson told Brown. "I hope you turn your life around and never again have to stand in a court of law."

Police who raided the Cave Creek, Arizona home of superstar rapper DMX have revealed that they have found a half-pound of suspected illegal narcotics, adding to to a list of charges that could be possibly filed against the rapper.

Officers in Maricopa County raided DMX's house on Friday (August 24), after neighbors complained to police that dogs were being subjected to the extreme Arizona heat and that the animals were constantly barking and being mistreated.

Gays & Lesbians vs Reggae Artistes in New York

Gay and lesbian activists are planning to protest the performers outside of the Reggae Carifest in New York today (Saturday August 25) to educate sponsors and concert goers on the dangers of anti-gay lyrics.

The festival which will be held at Randall’s Island was created to promote peace among cultures is being denounced by gay and lesbian groups for allowing performers with a history of anti-gay lyrics.

Today’s event will feature performances by Buju Banton and Bounty Killer, among several other acts at the day-long event.

Rashad Robinson, a spokesman for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) said the performers have a right to free speech, but so do protest groups. "We as an organisation value free speech. It gives us the right to stand up to vulgar anti-gay lyrics which promote violence," he said.

The City Parks Department, which operates Randall's Island, said in a statement yesterday that all performers signed a code of conduct agreeing to refrain from performing anti-gay lyrics at the promoter's request.

The issue of anti-gay lyrics in reggae and other Jamaican music surfaced years ago when Banton released “Boom Bye Bye,” which glorifies the shooting of gay men. The Beenie Man song “Han Up Deh” calls for a lesbian to be hanged, while TOK's song “Chi Chi Man” suggests the burning of gay men.

A concert last summer at Webster Hall was cancelled after a similar uproar over performers Beenie Man and TOK. Also last summer, British concerts featuring Banton and Beenie Man were cancelled after activists said the artistes refused to stop using anti-gay lyrics.

Reggae Carifest first launched in 1998 at the Forest Hills Stadium in Queens and has been held at Keyspan Park, Arthur Ashe Tennis Stadium and, most recently, Randall's Island. Promoters call the show an "explosion of West Indian exhibitionism".

African American Photographer BEATEN by Toronto Police seeks to have CHARGES DROPPED!!!!

TORONTO, CANADA...October 16, 2006, at approximately 1:40 pm after checking out of the Econolodge Hotel (335 Jarvis Street) and while in the process of hailing a taxi, Black Americans Tonye Allen and his fiancee, Ann Brown, were assaulted by several Downtown Toronto policemen from the 51st division. Mr. Allen, who did not resist, was beaten and pepper sprayed several times while handcuffed and in police custody. Ms. Brown was choked, shoved, and threatened with arrest as well.

Mr. Allen was never told why he was being detained. The arresting police refused to tell Ms. Brown where they were taking Mr. Allen. After locating the correct police station, Ms. Brown spoke with a "Det. Moyer," who said he "hadn't decided" what he was going to charge Mr. Allen with. Ultimately, Mr. Allen was charged with assault of two police and resisting arrest, times two.

After Ms. Brown posted cash bail of $1,000, Mr. Allen's passport was taken by "Det. Matthew Moyer."

Mr. Allen was unarmed. He had never been arrested. He had no criminal history. He has no history of drug/alcohol abuse or psychiatric problems. Mr. Allen and Ms. Brown are seeking publicity and legal references to help fight these false charges.

Mr. Allen is a photojournalist who works professionally under the name "TRILOBITE." His work has appeared in: Essence, Vibe, The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, LA Weekly, The Source Magazine, and on the TV show "Unsolved Mysteries." He has worked for Sony Music, PolyGram Records, Def Jam Records, and Interscope Records, among others. Ms. Brown is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in Essence, Black Enterprise, Upscale Magazine, The Source , and various other publications.

Mr. Allen and Ms. Brown were in Toronto on their way to South Africa.

Possible concussion

Where My Ladies At? is a "next generation" interactive film about Ho's, Hip Hop, and Sexuality.

Beginning August 10th, Where My Ladies At? will follow 4 people for 30 days in real time on the internet. The format will allow the audience to watch as they try to make a living and keep their dignity in the burgeoning Hip Hop sex industry.

Where My Ladies At? provides a space for a young, urban audience to explore issues of sexuality within Hip Hop. The film encourages users to dialogue about "pop culture porn" through blogs, video diaries, SMS forums, conversations with female Hip Hop pioneers, and a PSA video competition for youth.

Award-winning filmmaker, Leba Haber Rubinoff, created the project online because the internet is accessible, free and anonymous. Mary's kin told MediaTakeOut.com exclusively, "We just found out about [the pregnancy] yesterday and everyone's happy about it.". The family member continued, "Mary and [Kendu] have been trying to get pregnant for close to a year and [they] did it .... They're very blessed in so many ways."

Foxy Brown in court AGAIN?????

Foxy Brown turned herself into Brooklyn authorities yesterday (August 14) and was charged with felony assault for allegedly smacking her neighbor with her Blackberry cell phone.

According to New York's WABC, the incident occurred last month during a heated argument between Brown and the unidentified woman at the corner of Carlton Avenue and Prospect Place on July 30.

The 25-year-old woman was then rushed to Brooklyn Hospital with loose teeth and swelling around her lip and right eye. She filed a complaint with police, and after an investigation, Foxy (born Inga Marchand) agreed to turn herself in.

Brown was charged with felony assault, menacing, harassment and criminal possession of a weapon. She was arraigned last night and released on $5,000 bail. Her next court date is September 26.

The incident adds to Brown's growing legal woes. She is currently on probation for assaulting two manicurists in Manhattan's Bloomie Nails in 2004 and will be standing trial in Florida on a battery charge next month for spitting and throwing hair glue at a beauty store employee.

In related news, the Brooklyn bred rapper recently announced that she has left long-time recording home Def Jam and has started her own independent imprint called Black Rose Entertainment to be distributed by Koch Records.

The deal makes Foxy the first female MC to be given their own imprint under the Koch umbrella. Although the exact terms of the deal were not disclosed, label sources revealed it was a multi-million dollar negotiation that was signed after office hours.

Brown is slated to be the first artist to release material through the new label, gearing up to release the street album, Brooklyn's Don Diva, which is scheduled to drop sometime in December. The album will be the first since 2001's Broken Silence on Def Jam and the first since regaining her hearing.

"I have always been a symbol of independence as a female in music," Foxy said via a statement. "My brand is already established, millions of my records have already been sold, and I have a fan base already loyal, after 13 years at Def Jam, I felt it was time as a matured business women to move on and continue my brand under the roof of something I own."

Jah Cure's Performance in Holland BOOM!!!

What a show. Excellent band, including Dean Fraser as the director of the bunch, with Jah Cure giving an excellent set; wicked performance. All big tunes, audience very excited, Cure loving it too, lovely combo with Jah Mason (Run Come Love Me), Cure's voice sounded great live too. Very nice moment to witness, his first full performance after release (no need for discussing details of that again, been there). Tunes played were Longing For, Jah Bless Me, Jamaica, King In This Jungle, Run Come Love Me (feat. Jah Mason), Jamaica, What Will It Take, Good Morning Jah Jah, I'm Still Around, Reflections, Ghetto Life, Sticky, Love Is and maybe one or two more I can't recall now. My highlight of this year's festival no doubt!

Overall a good festival with stand-out performances for me by Natural Black, Tony Rebel, Bunny Wailer and Jah Cure. Mafia & Fluxy did a great job backing Gregory Isaacs, but the man himself had some throat-problems and didn't sound too good, nice to seem him still. Also nice to see acts like Marcia Griffiths, Tarrus Riley, Yellowman, Gyptian, LUST, Lutan Fyah (wasn't as good as previous time), Jah Mason (replaced Richie Spice), Capleton and Jimmy Cliff too.

Last but certainly not least, great to meet up with the Irish crew as well (dots69, rez and others), total niceness!

UPDATE: Beenie Man attempts to repossess M.A.F.I.A House furniture

People.. you si how people mix up...... Here is the full details from one876entertainment reporter who was on the scene.

Jamaican Dancehall artiste, Beenie Man managed to work his way into the news today but not by a stage performance at a show. This time it was a show at the offices of his M.A.F.I.A House label in Kingston.

A source close to the artiste told One876Entertainment that Beenie Man made a phone call to the office earlier today and the person who answered the phone made what they describe as a rude remark and said that they are no longer working with him. Beenie Man then asked the person on the phone who was paying the bills for the business and as a matter of fact, is coming to remove the furniture.

Beenie Man then came to the premises with his friends and a moving truck and they proceeded to remove the furniture and equipment from the offices.

When D’Angel heard about this she arrived at the premises and confronted Beenie Man and the movers. The source said D’Angel lifted her skirt and told Beenie Man to ‘suck her out back way because she f@ck fi this’ while she patted her genital area.

D’Angel tried to find receipts showing that she paid for them but she only found a contract for the furniture.

Beenie Man wasn’t paying her any attention as he joked and laughed with the huge crowd that converged around the building.

The confrontation seemed to be a delay tactic as she contacted her lawyer who came later with a court injunction ordered by the Supreme Court. According to a police officer, the injunction bars Beenie Man from entering or removing any equipment assets from this office and other premises as well. Beenie Man is also required to appear in court on August 23 based on the injunction.

Assistant Superintendent, Wayne Cameron told One876Entertainment that the police responded to calls that there was a dispute at 8 Garelli Avenue involving Moses Davis and Michelle Downer-Davis but when they arrived they realized there was no physical altercation.

The equipment and furniture were placed back in the office and Beenie Man left the compound.

Ja Rule In Court ...AGAIN!!!

While Ja Rule faces a serious weapons charge after being arrested last month in New York, the Murder Inc. rapper was in a court last week for a less minor offense – allegedly not paying his plumber.

Ja Rule, born Jeffrey Atkins, is disputing a criminal complaint brought by a local contractor who claims he was never paid $8,000 after fixing a bad leak at the rapper’s $3.5 million mansion in Saddle River, NJ.

“We put in 150 hours of manpower, which I gave to him for $13,000,” said Joel Tobia, insisting that he and six other men finished the work in three days.

“He paid me $5,000 and wouldn’t pay me the rest. I don’t know why.”

Brian Neary, Ja Rule’s lawyer, claimed that “some work was done,” but that the actual amount owed was $4,000 and disputed “whether the work was done properly and whether money is owed.”

The hearing on Thursday follows a previous ruling of $8,000 awarded to Tobia after Ja Rule failed to show up in civil court.

Meanwhile Ja Rule is currently free on $150,000 bail stemming from an incident in July, when the rapper was arrested after police pulled over his vehicle and found a semi-automatic handgun in the car.

Foota Hype remanded in custody

Jamaican selector Oneil ‘Foota Hype’ Thomas was remanded in custody when he appeared in the Half Way Tree Resident Magistrate's court last Friday.

Officers attached to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) informed One876Entertainment that the selector will reappear in the HWT Resident Magistrate’s court on August 17.

Deejay selector Foota Hype is a key member of the Bounty Killer-led Alliance. He had been charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

According to a police officer at the Constant Spring police station, he is suspected of being involved in a drive by shooting at St. John’s Lane that took place just before he was picked up. The police allege that he was involved in a drive by shooting at St. John’s Lane.

The allegations are that the police officers from the Constant Spring CIB intercepted the car at Manor View Drive in the Cassava Piece community where the vehicle was parked and Foota Hype sitting in it. When the car was searched, ten rounds were found wrapped in a piece of paper and ten were found in the magazine in an Ultra Star 9mm semi-automatic pistol.

According to Miss Info's site, one of her sources has informed her that 50 Cent entirely flipped out at G-Unit offices. According to the report, "50 was screaming into his blackberry phone, he was on a rampage, he ripped off the 70 inch plasma on the wall and then to top it off, he threw his phone straight thru the window of his executive office….shattering the glass all over thirtysomething street."

The report alleges that the source of this outburst may be traced to the words he said before he threw the phone out of the window: "He yelled 'You’re fucking everything up, you're messing up my look, my album, so you know what, I’m on fuckin' vacation now. Fuck you and fuck Interscope."

Apparently Fif was steamed that Interscope let 50's third (or is it sixth?) single, "Follow My Lead" ft. Robin Thicke leak on the web. The single, which wasn't supposed to come out until October (after the album drops and the Justin Timberlake collabo "Ayo Technology" loses steam).

Fif also apparently told the head of Interscope that "he’s boycotting all promo all media and possibly leaving the label."

Bounty To Face Courts Charges

The Warlord, deejay Bounty Killer will appear in court on September 12 to answer to charges that he threatened to kill a girlfriend in June of this year.

The deejay's lawyers had attemped to have the case thrown out of court today but were unsuccessful. One876entertainment.com will have more information on this case as it becomes available.

It is not the first run-in that Bounty Killer has had with the law in relation to a former girlfriend. Last year, Bounty Killer stood accused of the May 23 assault on his son’s mother, 33 year-old Julie Rambally. He answered to allegations that he had attacked Rambally as she walked down the street, punching and kicking her, before dragging her several feet and slamming her head into a wall. She was later treated at a local hospital.

The charges were eventually dropped by the complainant, however, the deejay was forced to enroll in an anger management program, as well as undergo random drug testing.

UK Gay News and the British newspaper the Guardian report that reggae and dancehall star Buju Banton is the fourth artist to sign the RCA, Reggae Compassionate Act. RCA is a part of the gay rights campaign ‘Stop Murder Music’. Other artists, such as Beenie Man, Sizzla and Capleton, have already signed the act.

Freemuse has previously reported about gay activists fighting the anti-gay music, the so called ‘murder music’, which has led to the boycott of several reggae musicians. Some lyrics have also been investigated by the Scotland Yard and as a result, the British government has been considering banning certain reggae stars from the UK.

Legitimate censorship?
Freemuse’s position when it comes to the censorship of music that glamorises violence and promotes hate is clarified by the Freemuse chairperson Martin Cloonan: “While it is an anti-censorship organisation, Freemuse does recognise that there may be occasions on which free speech can legitimately be restricted. In general we judge on a case by case basis and are guided by international conventions such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

Long battle
The ‘Stop Murder Music’ campaign has been going on for three years, but the battle between gay rights activists and dancehall artists has lasted much longer - about 15 years according to the Guardian. All the artists targeted by the ‘Stop Murder Music’ campaign have previously released anti-gay hate songs.

The Guardian describes Banton as “one of the most notoriously homophobic figures in reggae and dancehall music”. In 1992 he released ‘Boom Bye Bye’ and the song was a big hit although it advocated the shooting of gay men, pouring acid on them and burning them alive. After three years of campaigning against ‘murder music’, Banton’s signature is a symbol of the gay right campaign’s widespread influence.

Undermining homophobia
When signing the RCA, the artists promise not to produce music or make public statements inciting hatred against gay people. Neither can they authorise the re-release of previous homophobic songs. This applies to all over the world. The RCA says: “Artists of the Reggae Community respect and uphold the rights of all individuals to live without fear of hatred and violence due to their religion, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity or gender.”

The deal is a result of the collaboration between top reggae promoters and gay organisations all over the world. The campaign has resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of concerts, sponsorship and advertisement deals. And even more important: “This deal is already having a huge positive impact in Jamaica and the Caribbean. The media coverage has generated public awareness and debate; breaking down ignorance and undermining homophobia”, Peter Tatchell from the British human rights group ‘OutRage!’ says to the UK Gay News.

Sincere commitment?
Tatchell has been involved in negotiating the deal with the dancehall artists. He tells UK Gay News: “The singers’ rejection of homophobia and sexism is an important milestone. We rejoice at their new commitment to music without prejudice.”

But it still remains to see how sincere Buju Banton has been when signing the act. A spokesman for J-Flag, a Jamaican gay rights group, tells the Guardian: “I really hope that his actions are genuine and is not just because international pressure is hurting his pocket. We hope it is a sincere commitment that will end homophobic violence.” He is not the only one to fear that the change of mind is due to economic reasons. According to UK Gay News, the three-year-long ‘Stop Murder Music’ campaign is estimated having cost the Jamaican artists about five million US$.

Nevertheless - every step towards a more accepting attitude concerning homosexuality is welcomed by Jamaican gay rights groups. An article in the Time magazine describes Jamaica as “the most homophobic place on earth”. Gay sex is illegal and attacks on homosexuals occur frequently. Apart from that the media coverage is increasing public awareness regarding homosexuality; Tatchell underlines the importance of these major reggae stars renouncing homophobia. This is a signal to their fans and might also influence a wider audience in the long run.

Gay in Jamaica
The Jamaican authorities are condemned by the humanitarian organisations Amnesty International and the Human Rights Watch for not dealing with the severe violence homosexual men and women face every day. Verbal and physical attacks – such as beatings, rapes and murder - are widespread. Many homosexuals are threatened to death and driven from their homes and their belongings.

Time magazine reports that in Jamaica the anti-gay reggae is strangely mixed up with politics. Not only does the country have one of the world’s toughest anti-sodomy laws, but the major political parties regularly use homophobic music in their campaigns.

Homophobic atmosphere
UK Blackout magazine ask what the sources of this homophobic atmosphere might be? Jamaicans and students of Jamaican society have several different answers. “One factor is the confluence of West African and English cultures, together with a heavy overlay of God-fearing Christianity”, professor Jean Fuller Stanley says to UK Blackout. And according to Time magazine, this is how Banton grew up - in Kingston’s Salt Lane, a slum area dominated by ultraconservative Christian churches and extremely anti-gay Rastafarians.

In June 2004 Banton was charged with being a part of a mob severely beating of a group of homosexual men and forcing them to abandon their residence. The case was dropped and Banton claims that he is innocent, but it’s a fact that the Jamaican police often overlook evidence in anti-gay crimes. In fact – Human Rights Watch reports cases when the police themselves harass and attack supposed homosexuals and actively support homophobic violence.

The fight goes on
Before the gay activists take their eyes of the dancehall stars, they have to pass a trial period. If any of them break the agreement anywhere in the world - the campaign against them will be resumed, Tatchell informs UK Gay News. While Buju Banton continues his career without an anti-gay message, the ‘Stop Murder Music’ campaign keeps targeting artists who have not signed the act. Among these artists are Elephant Man, TOK, Bounty Killa and Vybz Kartel. Elephant Man states in one song: “Two women gonna hock up inna bed/That’s two Sodomites dat fi dead.” (Two women in bed / That’s two Sodomites who should be dead.)

Tatchell calls attention to that the homophobic songs of these artists are a moral equivalent of neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan. He calls for a world-wide boycott to make them reconsider their opinions.

UPDATE: Alleged Girl In R. Kelly Sex Tape To Testify In Singer's Defense

According to a Chicago Sun-Times report, the alleged girl in the R. Kelly sex tape will testify in the singer's defense at trial.

The woman, whose father played bass for R. Kelly and is referred to as Kelly's "goddaughter" in the liner notes to his "TP2.com" album turns 23 this September. She is set to take the stand and say that she is not the girl in the video. Prosecutors are expected to counter these claims by bringing forth the girl's relatives and friends to testify that she is the girl in the video and that it was made when she was 14.

The girl's identity has previously been confirmed by Sparkle, a former protégé of R. Kelly and the girl's aunt.

At a previous court hearing in the summer of 2005, the girl's former best friend testified it was her friend in the video. Though she did not mention it on the stand, court papers indicate the friend said she and the other girl hung out with Kelly starting in the summer after sixth grade.

The trial is expected to begin September 17

Sizzla violate me, Norris Man says

Norris Man is not backing down from any future confrontation with Sizzla or his entourage following his beat-down at the hands of Sizzla's turban-wearing Rastafarian supporters at the 'St. Mary Mi Come From' over the weekend.

“Ah country Sizzla come from, me ah original West Kingston man, me no haffi buy friend. Him fi know that as long as him live, him diss me,” he told One876Entertainment.

The major television stations have been carrying footage of the incident that occurred during Lady Saw’s set when Sizzla walked on and began to deejay. Norris Man entered the stage and declared that he had rehearsed with the Jah Prophecy band and was there to perform.

He then deejayed his hit, Big Long Gun Go Over Dem Yard on the Red Bull & Guinness rhythm to a roar of approval from the crowd.

“Hope anno me you a talk, Norris Man. Come offa me (expletive) stage,” Sizzla said.

Chastened, Norris Man then uttered what many believe to be his death warrant when he responded with a derogatory remark about Sizzla’s mother. He was then attacked and punched several times by several men, even when he had thrown up his hands in apparent surrender; the blows seemed to come from all sides.

After Capleton rushed in to part the melee, Sizzla continued to perform, saying:

“Norris Man, me a badman, mi nuh haffi cuss bad word, a Kingston me come from.” Then he promised that ‘some big long gun ah run out pon dem", and the crowd went wild.

Some people have said that the two had had some amount of friction because Sizzla felt Norris Man’s song on the RBG was a counteraction to Big Long Gun on the Applause rhythm.

Two days after the incident, Norris Man is still angry at the onstage attack. He promised that he would ‘see’ Sizzla’s entourage soon, and that they were hiding from him.

“Sizzla violate me...mi no punk inna war, why dem nah drive out? Nuh dem have all the machines dem? Right now, mi waan hear wah dem haffi say about this ting 'cause right now, mi nah go to no police wid my ting. Me know the whole ah dem who lick me, tell dem say dem nuffi run and hide, me ah see the whole ah dem. Dem anno artiste, and my fans waan see dem,” he said.

He said he was ready for a lyrical and a physical confrontation with those who were responsible for attacking him.

In the meantime, Claudette Kemp, Capleton’s manager, said that the David House camp would soon be issuing a press release regarding the annual show.

Jamaica's Anglican church to modernize hymnals with reggae songs

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) - Songs by late reggae legends Bob Marley and Peter Tosh will be included in a new collection of Anglican church hymnals in Jamaica.

Church leaders preparing a new collection of hymns say that Marley's "One Love" and Tosh's "Psalm 27" will be the first reggae tunes to appear in songbooks alongside traditional worship music on the island that gave birth to reggae.

Church spokesman Reverend Ernle Gordon said today that members of the Anglican Church of Jamaica were enthusiastic about including the reggae musicians' music in the hymnals, despite their sometimes vocal opposition to Christianity.

Gordon said the musicians may have been anti-church, but they were not anti-God or anti-religion.

Marley and Tosh, who both died in the 1980s after becoming international music stars, practised Rastafarianism, a faith founded by descendants of slaves in response to black oppression.

Jay-Z Denies Leaving Def Jam, Despite Rumors

Despite rumors of Jay-Z leaving his presidential position at Def Jam Recordings, in a recent Hot 97 interview the Brooklyn rapper denied the industry gossip.

“My three-year contract is up soon,” he explained on Friday, adding that although he hasn’t renewed it, he plans to.

For the past few weeks, industry insiders have been buzzing about Jay’s possible move to Columbia Records (currently run by Def Jam co-founder Rick Rubin), but he denied that as well.

“I guess Rick Rubin is [at Columbia] and we’ve got a relationship. But I haven’t talked to Rick since he started at Columbia. I called him to say congratulations. But I’ve learned to leave the possibility open. Sometimes rumors spark real things.”

Additionally Jay also said that he isn’t working on any new material in the near future, despite guest cameos on several singles and remixes, notably R&B singer Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab (Remix).”

Busta Rhymes Endures Yet Another Lawsuit

The lawsuits keep on emerging in the hip hop world, and unfortunately for Busta Rhymes at the moment, the majority encircle him. The most recent lawsuit initiates from a Bronx resident claiming that the rapper assaulted him after he "accidentally spat" on the rapper's car. He claims that Busta and his associates punched and kicked him severely enough to inflict concussion and a burst lip.

The lawsuit was filed August 6th and Busta's attorney states "Nothing has been proven yet". This lawsuit will be added to three others for Busta to endure including drunk driving, driving with a suspended licence and assaulting his ex-driver following a pay dispute. September 5th marks the date when the schedules will be decided upon.

Norris Man beaten by Sizzla’s entourage

What a way Norris Man persistent! The man cause two riot at St. Mary Mi Come From when an army of bobos descended on him and beat him to a pulp after he told Sizzla to 'suck his madda' while both of them were onstage.
Norris Man had been waiting backstage while Sizzla was performing an extended set. Norris Man walked onstage and began to perform. He told Norris Man to behave himself and leave the stage, and then Norris Man blurted out what could have been his death warrant when he said 'suck yu madda'.

Sizzla simply said, 'what yu tell me 'bout mi madda' and suddenly, a small army of turban-wearing men began to beat Norris Man savagely. In the meantime, Sizzla continued to deejay as if nothing had happened.

The onstage altercation caused a melee at the front of the stage, as some rastafarians in the crowd began to jump onstage in an earnest attempt to beat Norris Man as well. Capleton was able to restore order with a long stream of expletives and the show resumed. However, later, Norris Man returned onstage and appealed to the people, 'see what dem do me' and this time, he was boxed and mauled, and dragged off the stage like a ragdoll by another set of angry rastafarians. The crowd was terrified by what they were witnessing and there were several mini-stampedes throughout the packed venue.

One man shouted in awe: "Ah suicide Norris Man waah commit, why him go up there again?'

Buju Banton's 17 year-old Miami-born, Jamaican-raised nephew Sean Kingston is in the pole position of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his smash summer hit Beautiful Girls. The song leaped from number 23 to number 1, bringing an end to the two- week reign of Plain White T's Hey Delilah.

He is the first artist signed to Hip Hop super producer J.R. Foota Hype Arrested on Gun Charge

Deejay selector Foota Hype, a key member of the Bounty Killer-led Alliance, has been charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and is being held in custody at the Red Hills Road lock up in St. Andrew. He is suspected of being involved in a drive by shooting at St. John’s Lane that took place a few hours before he was picked up.

“The police say he was involved in a drive by shooting at St. John’s Lane, they intercepted the car at Cassava Piece where the vehicle was parked and Foota Hype sitting in it. The car was searched was 10 rounds were found wrapped in a piece of paper, and 10 were found in the magazine in an Ultra Star 9mm semi-automatic pistol,” the police told one876entertainment.com

He is not being held in the Constant Spring lock up because there is a problem with the holding facility there, the cops said.

JAH CURE .... Free At Lastttt!!!!

Jah Cure was released from the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre today before 8 a.m. into the waiting arms of his family. There are not that many releases on Saturdays but his case was expedited by members of the Correctional Services.

“He is out and somewhere in Kingston. He is fine and alive (laughing). I believe his family was there to meet him, but I haven’t spoken to him since his release but we will all see him tonight,” Allison Young, Jah Cure’s publicist said.

The concert being held in Jah Cure's honour has been shifted to October 12 - 14 due to the impending general election and according to his management, plans are going well. The two day event will be held at the Ruins in Ocho Rios and James Bond Beach, Oracabessa. Jah Cure will also perform at the Sundance Music Festival in Holland on August 12.

The mini-series is an interactive documentary that follows the lives of a struggling rapper, a former porn star and a well known video girl on their struggle for fame in real time over a period of 30 days. This is not an ordinary domentary or reality show the viewing audience can write in with their comments and the characters in the mini-series actually write back. What is KC Jockey's roll in all of this? He does what comes natural, he plays himself in an audition for a music video. If you ask me, this roll is a perfect fit.

Wow, talk about the true ladies of hip hop under the gun and no pun intended! On July 15, 2007, Rapper Remy Ma from the Boogie Down Bronx surrendered and turned herself in for allegations of attempted murder, assault and various weapons charges of her long time childhood friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph who was shot twice in the torso. The two had a dispute over $2,000 that was found missing from Remy's purse sources say that Ms. Barnes-Joseph had asked Remy to borrow $2,000 in which Remy may have or may have not wanted to lend her. Apparently, towards the end of the night Remy was $2,000 short.

That is just about too suspect if you ask me. Remy tried to give her friend the benefit of the doubt, but could not because her friend had stolen from her in the past and Remy forgave her. I am sure words were exchanged at the heat of the moment from both parties. Sources say that Remy does not [allegedly] own a gun and no one knows where the gun came from or who shot Ms. Barnes-Joseph. Remy's bail was set for $250,000 and is due in court August 14.

If I were Remy, you damn right I would be highly upset that my friend asked me for $2,000 and just by chance it got up and walked out of my purse. Personally I have had friends steal from me before and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth…wow is this a coincidence or an incident? You tell me!

Chances are that he could miss this year’s Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest because of his medical condition, but his camp is holding out for a positive prognosis from doctors.

There is a news release circulating on the internet and within certain media houses regarding an altercation between dancehall duo RDX, known for their hit single DANCE and Daddy Frass and the Frass Crew.

The story stated that, RDX (DJ Regnigade adn singer Delomar) were pulled into a yard at the popular DUTTY FRIDAZE spot in Fletcher's Land Kingston, Jamaica and threatened by gunmen affiliated with Daddy Frass and the Fras Crew.

Lester Gayle of R&R Records, the management team for RDX has come out boldly and denied all these reports. "What really happened was that dancer Sick N Head of Frass Crew has a beef with dancer Doctor Bird formerly of Timeless Dancers. The vibes is that RDX's latest single EVERYBODY DANCE' lyrics included Doctor Bird's dance move NEW YORK and not Sick N Head's NO RE ENTRY dance move which is alleged to be the same dance move."

Mr Gayle continued "The Long and Short is RDX is an artiste, they do music, and have always promoted unity amongst dancers. Busta Rhymes will face a string of trials for assault and driving violations after prosecutors lost a bid on Tuesday to consolidate four cases against the performer into one case.

Rhymes, 34, who has been arrested four times since last summer, gave his defense attorney a celebratory "high five" hand slap after Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Larry Stephen rejected the prosecution's argument to combine the cases.

The separate cases will be tried consecutively, with an opening date to be set at a September 5 hearing, the Manhattan District Attorney's office said.

The judge gave no public explanation for his decision, and the court papers have been ordered kept private and under seal on grounds that they detail the defense strategy.

"The decision today validates the defense's argument," said defense attorney Scott Leemon, who would not elaborate.

Rhymes, whose real name is Trevor Smith, was arrested most recently on May 3 on suspicion of drunk driving.

Earlier this year, he was arrested for driving with a suspended license, and on a separate occasion on suspicion of assaulting his personal driver.

In August 2006 he was arrested for allegedly beating up a man who reportedly spit on his car.

Also in court on Tuesday, Rhymes turned down, for a second time, a plea deal that would have sent him to jail for one year in exchange for a guilty plea to four misdemeanor charges.

He turned down a similar deal at a hearing in May.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (Reuters) - A former best friend and one-time manager of Reggae superstar Bob Marley was convicted on marijuana charges at the end of a seven-day trial late on Monday.

Former Jamaica football player Allan Cole, known as "Skill" because of his soccer abilities, was sentenced to 18 months in prison and fined J$1.015 million ($15,150) after being found guilty of possession of marijuana, dealing in marijuana and attempting to export the drug.

Cole's attorney Patrick Atkinson notified the court that his client would appeal and he was released on J$2 million ($29,850) bond.

Cole rose to prominence in 1966 by becoming the youngest schoolboy to represent Jamaica at football when he wore the national jersey against Haiti at 15 years and four months -- a record that still stands.

He played several years for Jamaica and also became the first Jamaican to land a professional contract in Brazil, playing for division one team Nautico in 1972.

But it was Cole's association with Marley that brought him even more fame.

Cole in published interviews said that he helped the Reggae star write seven of his hit songs, including "Exodus."

Cole was arrested on February 2, 2002, after police raided his house in the Jamaican capital and found 60 cartons of compressed marijuana, weighing 149 kg (328.5 lbs).

Cole, who maintained his innocence, said he was set up.

One876Entertainment understands that Jamaican dancehall artiste Mavado admitted in the Bridgetown Traffic court on Monday that it was a member of his security team who threw the first punch that resulted in a brawl and stone-flinging fracas in Barbados over the weekend.

The resulting brawl left two members of the security team, Michael Kevin Marsh 34, and David Joseph Hunter injured. Mavado, whose real name is David Brooks, and his cousin, Sammer Coombs, 22, an entertainer were not injured.

Seven people were charged in connection with the incident that stemmed from what was a promise to do dub plates.

According to the nationnews.com website, all four Jamaicans, admitted they used unlawful violence and their conduct was such as would cause others present to fear for their personal safety. Coombs admitted assaulting Jimal Edwards, causing actual bodily harm.

They were reprimanded and discharged and ordered to pay $500 costs to the court immediately. In addition, Coombs was ordered to pay $200 compensation to Edwards immediately. The monies were paid.

"Was all of this necessary?" asked Magistrate Christopher Birch. "All of this over music? I thought music was supposed to unite people. Mavado explained he was in Barbados to promote himself and his music, said he was driving through Bridgetown when some "crazy people" surrounded the vehicle.

Someone asked him for a dub plate and he said yes, all the while signing autographs.

"But we didn't really have an agreement or we really didn't talk no price," he said. Prosecutor Sergeant Glenda Carter said arrangements were made for local group Super Sounds to buy a dub plate for $1800. “When the local artistes went to collect, an argument ensued in which Coombs struck Edwards in the face. A fight followed, in which stones and other objects were thrown causing guests to scamper,” the prosecutor’s statements read.

The fracas at the hotel reportedly started when Mavado's cousin, Coombs complained he was attacked by some "yutes". When Movado went to see them, they rushed him "so my cousin run in front me and him chuck him off and that is what caused the whole commotion". The magistrate made references to the simmering feud between Beenie Man and Bounty Killer in Jamaica, and its implications for dancehall music and society.

"I have watched with interest and alarm the situation in Jamaican music. It wasn't long ago Bennie Man and Bounty Killa could not walk the streets without bullets flying," the magistrate said. "I would not want the Brotherhood in the region to descend to this again."

Michael Lashley, who represented the four, pleaded for anything other than a prison conviction. "I ask that you impose a fine or you can give them a very strong warning," he said. Calling the incident unfortunate, Lashley said Mavado, who had shows on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, had missed his flight out of the island as a result. Three other Bajans were released on bail and are set to return to court October 29 with Mavado.

After hearing about the concerns being voiced by members of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender community about international reggae icon Buju Banton, I felt it was important to reach out, as the public portrait that has been painted of Buju as an artist who has espoused violence, hatred and negativity his entire career is one of absolute fraud.

Indeed a young Buju Banton wrote the incendiary anti-gay tune “Boom Bye Bye” back when he was a mere 15 years old. Penned in response to a widely publicized man/boy rape case in Jamaica, it caused a furor in the states when it was re-released four years later in 1992. For the record, he had not performed the song since the early nineties and regularly speaks out against violence - against all people. “I was a child when I wrote those lyrics,” Buju admits. “But let me make it clear that I do not encourage or condone violence towards any human being, and that includes our gay brothers and sisters.” Last year, when Buju once again found himself the target of a new generation of gay activists, he utilized two lines from “Boom Bye Bye” only as a springboard to discuss the enduring persecution he has faced because of the song and to assure his fans just how much he has evolved since. Yet certain factions of the gay community have continued to use it against him in an attempt to discredit him in the media.

Those who have followed Buju Banton’s artistic development and have actually listened to his entire body of work, know of his prodigious growth into one of the world’s most prolific singer/songwriters - one whose consistently positive messages of peace, love and spiritual enlightenment are never lost in the music.

Buju’s 1995 release ’Til Shiloh was nominated for a Grammy award, landed on Spin magazine’s Top 20 Albums of the Year and hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the Best Albums of the Decade. His Grammy-nominated project Inna Heights (1997) and also Unchained Spirit (2000) garnered him numerous comparisons to the late great Bob Marley. His 2003 album Friends For Life was also nominated for a Grammy award, as was his most recent project Too Bad (2006).

Buju Banton’s love for humanity is not just demonstrated in words but also in deeds. Twelve years ago he responded to the AIDS crisis in Jamaica by launching Operation Willy, an organization focused on raising monies for HIV positive babies and children who lost their parents to the disease. For the past three years he served as spokesperson for Upliftment Jamaica, a US-based non-profit committed to working with underprivileged youth in Jamaica.

Buju and his Shiloh Band have played all around the world over the past 15 years, and the song has not been a part of his performance. His culturally diverse fan base - which, no doubt includes gay people - spans the Caribbean, North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East. For them, he is not simply an artist; he is a very necessary voice.

Three of the world's top reggae and dancehall singers have renounced homophobia and condemned violence against lesbians and gay men.

Beenie Man, Sizzla and Capleton had previously released anti-gay hate songs, including incitements to murder lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

They have now signed up to the Reggae Compassionate Act in a deal brokered with top reggae promoters and Stop Murder Music activists.

The Act reads:

"It must be clear there's no space in the music community for hatred and prejudice, including no place for racism, violence, sexism or homophobia.

"We do not encourage nor minister to HATE but rather uphold a philosophy of LOVE, RESPECT and UNDERSTANDING towards all human beings as the cornerstone of reggae.

"We agree to not make statements or perform songs that incite hatred or violence against anyone from any community.

"The agreement follows the three-year-long Stop Murder Music campaign, which resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of the singers' concerts and sponsorship deals, causing them income losses estimated in excess of five million dollars.

"The Reggae Compassionate Act is a big breakthrough," said human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, who is coordinator of the worldwide Stop Murder Music campaign. He helped negotiate the deal with the three singers.

"The singers' rejection of homophobia and sexism is an important milestone. We rejoice at their new commitment to music without prejudice," said Mr Tatchell."This deal will have a huge, positive impact in Jamaica and the Caribbean.

The media coverage will generate public awareness and debate, breaking down ignorance and undermining homophobia."Having these major reggae stars renounce homophobia will influence their fans and the wider public to rethink bigoted attitudes. The beneficial effect on young black straight men will be immense," he said.

Mr Tatchell said that the campaign against the three artists will now be suspended, but he urged journalists and others worldwide to monitor the performances and statements of Beenie Man, Sizzla and Capleton.

The fight against other homophobic performers continues:

"The other five murder music artists - Elephant Man, TOK, Bounty Killa, Vybz Kartel and Buju Banton - have not signed the Reggae Compassionate Act.

"The campaign against them continues. These singers have incited the murder of lesbians and gays. They should not be rewarded with concerts or sponsorship deals."

The Stop Murder Music campaign urges organisations worldwide tointensify the campaign to cancel these five singers' concerts andtheir record, sponsorship and advertising deals," said Mr Tatchell.

His views are echoed by Gareth Wiliams, co-chair of the Jamaican gayhuman rights group, J-Flag:"

This statement against homophobia and violence is a move in the right direction," he said."

We hope it is not commercially motivated by the singers' desire to maintain their concert revenues, but a sincere commitment that will encourage an end to homophobic violence and to all violence against everyone.

"The five artists who have not signed the statement should now follow this lead and declare their support for universal human rights, including the human rights of lesbian and gay people," said Mr Williams.

Top dancehall male group Voice Mail added another trophy to their growing list of accolades. The group came out the big winner at the Jamaica Observer Fashion and Style Awards, which was recently held at the Terra Nova Hotel.

Voice Mail won the Digicel People's Choice Award for their astute knack for style and dressing.

Commenting on their triumph, group member O'neil Edwards said 'Its an awesome feeling that we were voted by the public for this award. A scandalous scuffle between top supermodel Jaunel McKenzie and another Pulse model, Dahlia, the wife of top male model Orane Barrett, added intrigue to the Caribbean Fashion Week activities at the National Indoor Sports Centre over the weekend.

According to reports, there were two altercations, one on Saturday night and on Sunday night.

The following reenactment is based on reports by bystanders, fellow models, but unfortunately no pugilistic experts:

As one version of the events go, Dahlia and Jaunel were in a line going onstage when Jaunel pushed Dahlia in the back.

“Jaunel has a crush on Orane from long time, and she and Dahlia had a beef from overseas, so when they were in a line when Jaunel pushed Dahlia in the back. When they got offstage, Dahlia said to her ‘if you do that again, I will smack you in the face’, and Jaunel shouted: ‘what you going to do, you bitch?’ so Dahlia slapped her in her face,” one model told One876Entertainment.com.

Another version said that the spat began when Dahlia mistakenly donned a designer outfit that Jaunel was supposed to strut on the catwalk.

Eyewitnesses allege that as catfights go, the McKenzie-Barrett feud was quite a yawn as there was no scratching, hairpulling, spanking, breast mauling, or clothes stripping, or anything you might associate with a good old-fashioned catfight.

“Mi a wait fi see the fight gwaan but nothing neva happen. Afterwards, dem tek it into the parking lot and Jaunel’s mother go get involved, and started talking to the girl in a loud manner, there was a lot of drama but no blows, just 90 per cent mouth talk,” he added.

Another witness said that he saw “people running up and down and a man even draw his gun”.

A popular selector, whom it is rumoured played the music on a gay tape that is circulating islandwide, has fled his community in what is thought to be an effort to distance himself from the allegations.

The selector, who hails from an eastern Kingston community, reportedly fled after residents said they discovered that he was on the tape. Now the once-popular selector's name is a like a curse word, not to be uttered in the community. "Wipe off yuh mouth," one resident said when theSTAR team asked about the selector recently.

Other residents reacted similarly, stating that his name should not be called in the area. "Dem man deh name nuh call roun' ere. Mek mi tell yuh straight him a byman," one resident told THE STAR.

The voice of the selector in question is said to be featured on the tape being circulated. The tape is of a party where several cross-dressing men are dancing to popular tunes being played. At intervals a selector is heard saying "turn me on" and "walk out my girl", among other things.

The residents say that after some residents saw the tape and believed that it was his voice, the selector left the area. They added that someone even used technology to zoom in on aspects of the tape to prove that it was the selector. "A him deh pan di tape. Man all computer it and see tings weh prove seh a him. Him voice and di tings him say, tings weh only him woulda say," he said.

Residents say that the selector gave no explanation for the allegations as he just left before they could confront him. "Him nuh seh nutten, him just left one day. Wi just nuh see him again."
In addition, residents say they do not want him to come back, noting that his presence on the tape proves that he is really gay.

The selector's sudden disappearance has set off several rumours, including one that he was told by his baby mother not to come back to the community two weeks ago. However, residents in the community said they knew of no baby mother.

Another vicious rumour which THE STAR has been unable to prove is that he is dead. Another selector, who provided a contact number for the accused man, said it is now being circulated that he was killed. The selector, however, could not say if the so-called murder occurred because the man was suspected to be gay.

In the meantime, efforts to find the selector were unsuccessful, as several persons said they were unaware of his whereabouts, and calls to his cellphone number resulted in busy tones.

Bob Marley as once quoted as saying 'The Words of the songs, not the person, is what attracts people' and how these sentiments ring true today. Who would have thought that the mere idea, some 15 years ago, of hosting a reggae festival could have grown into an event of such trenedous magnitude attracting over 30,000 patrons last year alone. Today Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest holds a dominant place on the local entertainment calendar and is viewed, across the world, as the marquee reggae event of the Summer.

To celebrate reaching this pivotal point of 15 years, the organizers of Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest Productions have promised a star studded line upof local and international talents. Of course every attention will be paid to organization, security and production, to ensure that all goes well for the festival scheduled for Sunday July 15th to Saturday July 21st, in Montego Bay Jamaica.

Johnny Gourzong, Executive Directors of Summerfest Produtions, says that this year marks an important milestone for the festival and he gave his assurance that the event would be a first class one that wil feature plethora of talent, both new and 'well seasoned'".

The week long evet will begin with a beach party featuring the Fab5 band. Dancehall night dubbed the 'Xplosion' will kick off the signature three nights on Thursday July 19th with artistes like Bounty killer, Elephant Man, Baby Cham, Beenie Man, Ninjaman, Vegas, Lady Saw, Macka Diamond and Anthony B. Hot and relatively new dancehall acts including Movado , Aidonia, Munga Honourable and Busy Signal are also on the line up. As the names suggests 'Xplosion' will see explosive talent and convergence of different styles with Vybes Kartel, Chuck Fenda, Wayne Marshall, Voice Mail, Litte Hero, Gyptian, Luthan fyah, Europ, Shane O, Teflon and Kip Rich rounding out the set for the night.

The Evolution is up next representing the firs of the two (2) international nights on Friday July 20th. Grammy award winner, 'Mr. Church Heathen' himself, Shaggy, will perform alongside some of Jamaica's other greate- Buju Banton and Morgan Heritage.Richie Spice, Etania, Davile , the scorching vocalist Cherine Anderson and the ever rising star Christopher Martin are also included on the line up. Things will climax on Saturday night July 21st at the 'Zenith' where the sultry soulful diva Mary J. Blidge will entice the audience with her powerful lyrics. She will share the stage with another powerhouse Tanya Stephens while Allison Hinds will add a soca element fresh from Carnival. The leading man of soul, Bere Hammond, will combine his potent lyrics and heart stopping performance to the event as well.

The evening 's entertainment will be completed by Jamaica's very own 'John Legend' of reggae music, Tarrus Riley and the Empress of rock reggae Tessanne Chin who will be backed by the band Rootz Underground.

Carlo Redwood, Group Marketing Manager for Red Stripe, the title sponsors of the event admits that he is elated to be a part of the event for yet another year and expressed great confidence in the Summerfest team to put on another record breaking show.

Sean Paul is presently off the island on a week-long series of gigs in Tahiti, but despite his many overseas gigs, the deejay still finds the time to put in work in the studio to record banging new joints for his fans.

“The deejay is working hard and he has a number of collaborations with rap artistes such as Eve, and Omarion that will be released soon,” manager Jeremy Harding told One876entertainment.com.

He recently recorded ‘Give It To Me’ with Eve and featured alongside P. Diddy on Omarion’s ‘Beg For It’. When he returns to the island next week, he will be shooting the video for the ‘Always on My Mind’ remix with Daville. The video will be directed by Ras Kassa, and will be shot in Kingston.

The dancehall world is buzzing over word that a physical altercation between Craig Dennis, an honorary member of the Portmore Empire and Einstein, the newest member of the Alliance.

Craig Dennis used a microphone to hit Einstein across his forehead. Einstein was forced to take evasive action as a number of men began to stab at him. After escaping, he drove himself to the Kingston Public Hospital but luckily, he received only minor injuries.

“Is a little hype dem want him get, dem know say mi say Alliance, but mi no just say Alliance, dem say Stein too, but even though mi endorse Alliance, mi nah go see Vybz Kartel and gwaan like me waan screw, me ah go be real, because we was friends before the commotion.
